At The Gentle Dentist, we understand the importance of a healthy and confident smile. Dental crowns play a crucial role in restoring both the function and aesthetics of your teeth, and we're here to ensure that the process is as comfortable and seamless as possible for residents in Mt Warren Park, Beenleigh and surrounds.
What is a Crown?
A crown is a restoration that covers and protects the whole tooth. It is different to a filling, which only fills a cavity inside the tooth.
Crowns are usually recommended for teeth that are compromised and prone to breaking due to existing large fillings, heavy bites or following a root canal treatment.
Crowns can also be useful in improving the appearance of teeth that are discoloured, of irregular shape, or not in line with adjacent teeth.
What’s involved?
Treatment usually involves 2 visits, 3 weeks apart.
During the first visit, your tooth will be reshaped to allow enough space to insert a crown.
Impressions will be taken which are sent to a laboratory and your tooth will be fitted with a temporary crown while the laboratory prepares your new crown.
At your second visit, your temporary crown is removed and your final crown is fitted and cemented to your tooth.
What is the long-term prognosis?
While there is no guarantee a crown will last a lifetime, a fragile tooth may be preserved by a crown far better than if it was left untreated. There is no formula to predict how long a crown will protect a tooth for but with good at-home care and regular professional dental care, your crown may last many years.
